Doyle “Bud” Pugh
It was many years ago when I was still quite small,
That I first met old Alex, as I now recall.
He was leading a mule down our country road on that summer day
His pace was slow, as he mumbled to himself each step of the way.
“Mister, where are you going with that old dumb mule” I unwisely said,
After a pause, he then replied “This is old Jake, the wisest creature ever bred.
Let me tell you little partner, there is only two things in this world that old Jake don’t know,
And one ain’t important and the other ain’t so.
There will be more wisdom emerge from the side of a mule that you see as he walks away,
Than you’ll learn from a politician that you hear talking all day.
When you push a mule too far he’ll know when to stop.
When you give a man ample leeway he will invariably go over the top.
Little partner, these are statements that I feel compelled to make,
And any man that takes exception can just kiss my old Jake.”
There is one thing that I’ll swear till my dying day,
I saw a smirk on that old mule’s face as he and Alex strolled away.
