The murder trial of an Independence man entered the second day on Tuesday and jury deliberations and a verdict could come down today.

Demetrius R. Harbour, of Independence, is on trial for allegedly killing his girlfriend, Lynn A. Kelly, at their home at 18190 Manor Drive in eastern Independence.

Detective Sgt. Arnold Wilson, the lead investigator for the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, testified Tuesday that he walked in a master bedroom at the house and saw Kelly laying on the bed. The murder allegedly happened on Aug. 14, 2008.

Kelly, 32, was wrapped in a blanket with a sheet over her face, according to court records.

Harbour was Kelly’s boyfriend who had been living with her. She had two children who were living at the home.

An autopsy report showed the cause of death as blunt force head injury and manual strangulation.

Prosecutors Tuesday showed jurors an aluminum baseball bat and rubber mallet that were possibly used in the attack.

But a criminalist with the Kansas City Police Department’s crime lab testified that no blood was found on the bat or mallet. However, a blood spot was found on a small white hand towel and a pair of cargo shorts.

The jury will hear more testimony today before closing arguments.

The jury is made up of nine men and three women.
