A man who terrorized and then robbed several  Eastern Jackson County businesses armed with a hatchet was sentenced to 23 years in prison.

A Jackson County circuit judge  sentenced 54-year-old Vincent W. Williams last Thursday.

Williams admitted to Jackson County Judge Jack Grate that he robbed four businesses last July.

He wielded a hatchet in the robberies. Williams robbed the Motel 6 in Independence on July 17; a Subway restaurant in Blue Springs on July 18; another Subway in Independence on July 20; and a motel in Kansas City.

Prosecutors charged him with one count of first-degree armed robbery and armed criminal action in each of the robberies.

The judge sentenced Williams to 20 years in state prison on the robbery charge and three years on the armed criminal action. He sentenced him exactly the same on the three other robbery cases but ran the sentences concurrently, meaning he will serve 23 years.

He entered the Subway at Missouri 7 and R.D. Mize Road in Blue Springs. He ordered a philly cheese steak sandwich and grabbed a bag of chips and a bottle of milk, according to a previous report in The Examiner. When the cashier asked for payment, the man opened a duffel bag and removed a hatchet.

Security cameras captured Williams robbing an Independence Subway and police released the footage to the news media. A woman who knew “Vince” told police that “Vince” told her that he robbed several businesses, according to court records.

Also, a Subway employee picked Williams out of a photo line-up.
