The National Weather Service is still calling for four to seven inches of snow – probably with some sleet and ice – starting late Wednesday night.
Driving on Thursday is expected to be treacherous, and a wide range of community events have already been canceled.
As of late Tuesday, the Weather Service had posted a winter storm watch for all of Missouri except for the Bootheel. That includes the metro area on both sides of the state line. However, the rest of Kansas and most of Nebraska are already under a winter storm warning.
In the metro area, the snow – maybe an inch or two – is expected to start falling heavily after midnight. The chance of precipitation is 80 percent. The low is 22, and there’s a gusty wind out of the east.
That turns to snow and sleet before 3 p.m. Thursday, then back to snow, then a mix of snow and freezing drizzle. The chance of precipitation is 100 percent, and that could bring another three to five inches of snow and sleet. The freezing drizzle lasts into Thursday evening. Thursday’s high is 31, with an east wind gusting to 29 mph, and that night it falls to 22.
Overall, the heaviest snow is expected generally north of U.S. 36, which runs through St. Joseph, Cameron and Chillicothe. The heaviest ice accumulations are expected south of a line from Mound City, Kan., to Clinton, Mo., Sedalia and Boonville. The area in between – including Eastern Jackson County – should look for snow, sleet and freezing rain.
After this storm blows through, it gets clearer for a few days, with highs of 28 Friday, 33 Saturday and 47 Sunday. Then it could rain and snow again Sunday night.
