The National Weather Service says Thursday’s snowfall – 9.2 inches officially at Kansas City International Airport – was the fifth-highest February snowfall on record in Kansas City. That’s a little more than the 8.9 inches recorded in the Feb. 1 blizzard two years ago.
Snow at times fell at three inches an hour, and the Weather Service has posted higher unofficial readings around the metro area, including 9.5 inches in Independence, 10.5 inches in Blue Springs, 11 inches in Lee’s Summit, a foot in Lone Jack and, the highest, 13.5 inches in Overland Park.
That 9.2 inches at KCI also easily broke the old Feb. 21 record, 5.1 inches just three years ago.
The snow put the area at 14.1 inches so far this winter, an inch shy of normal at this point in the season. Kansas City gets about 18 inches of snow in an average winter. The forecast includes a good chance of rain and show Sunday evening, Monday and Tuesday, but so far amounts are not expected to be heavy.
