The metro area is under a winter storm warning in advance of storm expected to bring perhaps more than a foot of snow starting Monday, making driving dangerous.
The National Weather Service has posted a warning for about one-third of Missouri – St. Joseph east to Bethany and Kirksville and then back south and west to Moberly, Boonville and Clinton – plus eastern and central Kansas. Western Kansas, western Oklahoma, the Texas Panhandle and other areas are under blizzard warnings.
The metro forecast calls for snow and sleet to begin around 4 p.m. Monday, then just snow after 7. The snow falls through Tuesday, with the heaviest amounts late Monday and Tuesday morning. Monday’s high is 36, and the low is 28.
“Accumulations up to and possibly exceeding 12 inches are possible,” the Weather Service says in the warning posted at mid-afternoon Sunday. The chance of precipitation is 100 percent both Monday night and Tuesday. Blustery winds, mainly out of the north, are expected to make driving more hazardous.
The winter storm warning is in effect from 3 p.m. Monday to 3 p.m. Tuesday.
The snow ends around 7 p.m. Tuesday, but there’s another chance of snow Wednesday and Wednesday night. Tuesday’s high is 31, and the low is 25, followed by 32/22 Wednesday.
“Significant amounts of snow are forecast that will make travel dangerous,” says the Weather Service warning. “Only travel in an emergency. If you must travel ... keep an extra flashlight ... food ... and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.”
