The following items were taken from the Nov. 14 through 20, 1909, Examiner.

A meeting of owners of land in the Missouri river bottoms north of Atherton was held in the parlors of Chrisman-Sawyer Bank. They talked of the ravages of the river in recent years and discussed plans for flood prevention. The building of a big levee is considered the most feasible plan talked of. The levee would be in the shape of a horseshoe, about five miles in total length, with two extremities reaching to the higher ground on the south.

A widow who is struggling to support a family of five has two little girls, one is 13 years of age and one is 11. She has come now to the point where she must give up the effort or get help. She is willing that the little girls be taken, together preferred, but separately if they must be, and given homes. Anyone interested may get particulars by telephoning 385-3.

Judge William H. Wallace of Kansas City spent Wednesday in Independence. He brought with him a bunch of blank petitions to be signed by men in Independence who are willing that the people of the state vote on an amendment to the constitution prohibiting the manufacture and sale of intoxicating liquors in the state.

R.D. Mize walked home from Waterloo, just 25 miles from Independence. It was not because he did not have money enough for a ticket, but because he would rather walk than wait the several hours for a train. He walked the distance in 5 1/2 hours, arriving at 7:30 p.m. The train only beat him by half an hour.
