Melissa Harris, an Independence resident, adopted Clothier Park as part of the Baha’i community. Baha’i is a faith community, with followers in Independence, that has the central theme of humanity as one single race. There are more than 5 million followers throughout the world. Each week, five to 10 members of the Independence Baha’i community clean up the park behind the former Medical Center of Independence.

Why did you want to volunteer to clean up Clothier Park? Because it was something that we could do for our community. It is nice to get outside to help. It is good to be of service to your community.

How does it make you feel when you see garbage littering the park?

Frustrated. I know for a while, there were not any garbage cans in the park, but now there are. I am always surprised about the amount of trash we find each week. It would not take much effort for someone to throw their trash away.

Children often help in the park clean up. Why do you think the idea of services is an important one to share with them?

I think giving back to your community is something that should be instilled at an early age. That way they can always think about what they can do for their community.

What do you think of the city of Independence’s Declaration for Independence program?

I think it is an excellent idea to get more people involved in the community. It will help them to think about what they can do for their community.

What others say about cleaning up Clothier Park:

“I think it is good to help because animals could come and eat some of the trash, which would not be good. I wish people would clean up their mess, so we would not have to.”
