A teenager who police initially believed had abducted a Grain Valley teenager last week will not be charged, according to Independence police.
Makenzie R. Green, 16, was reported missing last Wednesday after she dropped off a friend in Grain Valley.
Police found her car abandoned in a parking lot in Independence. Her purse and cell phone were inside.
Authorities believed she had been abducted by her 16-year-old ex-boyfriend who lived near where the car was found.
A memo was discovered inside the car that was addressed to Green’s father, Gary Green. It said she was scared and he needed to come find her.
Police believed she was in danger so they issued an Amber Alert.
“We requested and received the Amber Alert based on the memo she left behind,” said police spokesman Tom Gentry.
The following morning, police captured the two at a home in St. Joseph.
No charges will be filed against the ex-boyfriend, Gentry said. Based on interviews with the girl and the ex-boyfriend, detectives “believed they would not be able to present a case,” Gentry said.
However, police are pursuing charges against people in St. Joseph who harbored the girl at their house while a regional law enforcement search was underway and an Amber Alert had been issued, Gentry said. Also, the people lied to police about the two being inside the house when they knew she was staying with them.
