Kelly Cochran, Kent Sloan, Tanner Ginavan, Christina Vaughn and Stephen Newberry have been selected as Students of the Month by the Rotary Club of Independence.

Cochran is a senior at Fort Osage High School and has a 4.0 grade point average; earned a 31 on the ACT; received the FORCE Award for academic recognition; received the All-Fort Osage Award for three years; had the most varsity tennis wins in 2010l received the Most Improved Tennis Player Award in 2010 and 2011; was a sectional qualifier for tennis in 2011; was the Discuss Award Winner in 2011; is president of the National Honor Society and was a 2011 Wendy’s Heisman School Winner.

In addition, she is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes; is the founder and president of the Young Conservatives Club and is a four-year member of the varsity tennis team.

Cochran plans to go to college and major in mathematics. Her parents are Ron and Jodi Cochran.

Sloan is a senior at Fort Osage High School and is a three-year member of Wind Ensemble; is the trumpet section leader; has been named t the A/B honor roll throughout high school; is a member of the 2011 UCM Honor Wind Symposium and is a two-time letter recipient in band.

In addition, he is a member of the Fort Osage Red and White Brigade; is a member of the Fort Osage Warpath Show Band and the Fort Osage Wind Ensemble; is a member of the Fort Osage Jazz Band; plays ice hockey and is interested in O-gauge model railroading.

Sloan plans to attend the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, Mo. to pursue a degree in accountancy. He would then like to work in an accounting/financial firm or as a CPA. His parents are Sonia and Ellis Sloan.

Ginavan is a senior at Fort Osage High School and is an Eagle Scout; was the 2009 Missouri Freestyle Wrestling State Champ and was a member of the 009 Missouri national Wrestling Dual Team.

In addition, he is a member of the varsity football and wrestling teams and is also interested in hunting and fishing.

Ginavan plans to attend the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y. to study nuclear engineering. His parents are Joe and Dana Ginavan.

Vaughn is a senior at St. Mary’s High School and has received varsity letters in cheerleading and volleyball; participated in Missouri Girls State and is vice-president of the Student Council.

Newberry is a senior at St. Mary’s High School and has been named to the honor roll the last four years.

In addition, he is a member of the football, basketball and baseball teams and is a member of the Spirit Club and Spanish Club.

Newberry plans to attend college. His parents are John Newberry and Maureen Mihelic.
