WHAT'S HAPPENING? The Missouri Department of Transportation is getting ready to open a new ramp, from southbound I-435 onto U.S. 40, where a new bridge was put in last year. Ultimately, that new ramp is expected to alleviate some of the traffic that frequently backs up where southbound I-435 flows into eastbound I-70.
More immediately, however, that new ramp means MoDOT can detour traffic and build a new ramp for traffic southbound on I-435 and turning west (into Kansas City) on I-70. That’s one more step to clear the way for widening I-70 to six lanes from the stadiums to Manchester Trafficway.
The new ramp off southbound I-435 opens July 25, and the detour lasts from then to Aug. 19. Traffic will detour onto the ramp, then west on 40 to the recently renovated ramps connecting 40 and I-70.
MORE DETOURS ARE COMING
- The ramp from westbound I-70 onto Manchester will close July 25 through Aug. 4. Drivers can get onto Manchester from 40 or eastbound I-70.
- MoDOT will close the ramp from northbound I-435 onto westbound I-70 Aug. 4-19. Detours will be marked.
- MoDOT will close the ramp from westbound I-70 onto southbound I-435 Aug. 22 to Sept. 1. Detours will be marked.
MoDOT also installing a ramp from U.S. 40 onto northbound I-435.
WHAT ELSE IS GOING ON? Deck work continues on the Interstate 70 bridges over U.S. 40 and Sterling Avenue near Blue Ridge Crossing (Wal-Mart and Lowe’s). Traffic has been cut to two lanes each way in that area, backing up traffic significantly. That work is to be wrapped up by mid-August.
Work continues on a “collector/distributor” lane to take I-435 traffic coming from the south and running it directly to the stadiums. Grading and a retaining wall are needed for that.
THIS SEEMS TO BE THE BUSIEST INTERSECTION IN THE METRO AREA. IS IT? MoDOT says yes.
WILL THIS CONSTRUCTION END? MoDOT says by the end of the year.
