Two Kansas City men face several charges after they led police on a high-speed pursuit that began in Independence on Monday afternoon.

The men were driving at a high rate of speed on West Truman Road when they were spotted by Independence police at about 4:44 p.m. Monday, according to Tom Gentry, spokesperson for police.

At one point, the passenger of the vehicle began throwing items out of the car, which may or may not have been drugs and drug paraphernalia. Police must test suspected drug items first.

The vehicle led police into Kansas City, reaching high speeds.

“Our officers were the ones that called it off,” Gentry said, saying that speeds were too high to justify a pursuit.

Kansas City police were alerted and dispatched a search helicopter, which monitored the vehicle as it eventually reached U.S. 24. Near Askew Avenue, the driver struck a tree and the two men got out of the vehicle and ran.

One of the suspects was apprehended immediately, but the other forced his way into a house. Police were able to remove him without incident, and no one was injured.
