Crime victim’s rights observed next week
National Crime Victim’s Rights Week is Sunday through May 2 and there will be a national observance and candlelight vigil from 7 to 8 p.m. April 29 at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, 3736 Lee’s Summit Road, Independence.
The event is sponsored by various victims services, and is open to anyone who has been effected by a violent crime, including victims, survivors, family, friends and community supporters. For information, call 373-2600.

The National Frontier Trails Museum is sponsoring an “Evening Wagon Ride and Swales Walk” at 6:30 p.m. April 30, at the Trails Museum, 318 W. Pacific Ave., Independence.
Enjoy a relaxing Pioneer Trail Adventure wagon ride to hear some of the history of Independence (pulled by genuine Missouri mules), explore swales (ruts) made by 1830s Santa Fe caravans, and learn about the Santa Fe Trail while touring the Santa Fe Gallery of the Trails Museum.

Women’s clinic hosts fundraiser April 30
The Women’s Clinic of Kansas City will be holding a fundraiser at 6:30 p.m. April 30 at the Adams Pointe Conference Center, Blue Springs.
The speaker will be Jennifer O’Neill, with Mark Alford of Channel 4 as emcee, and Lou Engle with House of Justice and the Call as honored guest.
The Women’s Clinic is located at 815 N. Noland Road, Independence. The clinic saved 840 babies and their mothers last year, plus gave compassionate and forgiving counseling to may post abortive women.

“Adventures in Learning,” sponsored by the Independence Shepherds Center will be held May 1 at Christ United Methodist Church, 14506 E. 39th St., Independence.
Registration for classes and free blood pressure checks begin at 8:30 a.m. A travelog is presented at 9 a.m., and classes begin at 10 and 11 a.m. The book, “Pearl Harbor Child,” will be reviewed by Dorinda Nicholson and during the Wellness Faire at 10 a.m., fall prevention will be discussed. The financial workshop, “Where will my assets go after I die,” history, genealogy and board games begin at 11. Lunch is at noon.

Independence to host bike rodeo
The Independence Police Department and Independence Parks and Recreation are sponsoring a Bike Rodeo from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. May 2 on the south side of the Community of Christ Auditorium, 1001 W. Walnut St., Independence.
Event includes free bike tune-ups, inspections and challenge courses geared to keep kids safe while riding, free child identification kits, fire truck tours and free helmets.

Adoption association hosts ‘Ribs for Kids’
“Ribs For Kids,” a Midwest Foster Care and Adoption Association benefit, will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. May 2 at McGonigle’s Market, 79th and Ward Parkway.
MFCAA provides foster and adoptive children the opportunity for a stable, caring and nurturing family environment by recruiting, training and supporting foster and adoptive parents.

Karate classes begin next month
Independence Parks and Recreation is sponsoring karate classes Mondays and Wednesdays, May 4 through 27 at the Sermon Center, Truman and Noland Roads.
Division I is for ages 5 to 9 and meets from 6:30 to 7 p.m., and Division II is for ages 10 and older and meets from 5:45 to 6:30 p.m.
The elements of karate combine to provide great exercise and positive discipline, as well as improve coordination, all in a fun environment.
