The following items were taken from the Oct. 6 through 12, 1962, Examiner.

A plaque reading “In recognition of your outstanding contributions to the Automotive Industry Hall of Fame, 1962” was presented to Leonard Hunting at the fourth annual Auto and Allied Products Exhibit in Las Vegas, Nev. Hunting of 1400 Arlington is a lifelong resident of this area.

Three Independence students at the University of Kansas are among the 149 students receiving $208 general scholarships for the academic year. Deanna D. Beals, Donna R. Moore and George J. Woolridge received the awards to be applied on tuition and fees.

Mayor L.F.P. Curry turned a symbolic spadeful of earth officially marking the start on construction of a $1 million building at the northeastern edge of Independence. The Rev. Reuel Johnson, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, gave the invocation.

Maurice Russell has been elected president of the Jackson County Realtor Board for 1963, replacing Lloyd Boten of Lee’s Summit.

Petitions for making the Watkins Mill property a state park are being circulated throughout Clay County. L.E. Oberholtz, one of the trustees, reports that a speakers bureau is being set up to assist the promotion.
