An ordinance that would extend the lease of the Public Defender’s Office at a downtown Kansas City office building was held in committee for the sixth consecutive meeting.

Legislators have expressed an interest in moving the office to Independence, where office space may be cheaper, or to a county-owned building to reduce costs. Previously, the Public Defender’s Office was housed in the County Courthouse, but it outgrew its space. The county, by law, is required to provide space for the office.
