A preliminary hearing for the Grain Valley elementary school teacher charged with child molestation and sodomy of four young boys has been scheduled for Feb. 8.
Matthew J. Nelson, 33, was charged with first-degree child molestation and three felony counts of statutory sodomy.
Nelson appeared in court Wednesday. The court notified him that one of his attorneys had recused himself from representation.
Parents contacted Grain Valley police and told them that their sons, ages 7 to 9, reported that Nelson had inappropriately touched them in his classroom. The incidents are alleged to have occurred between 2010 and 2011.
The boys told police that Nelson touched their private areas through clothing or directly during classroom hours, including during movie times and reading periods, according to court records.
Nelson has been a teacher for several years at Prairie Branch Elementary School in the district. He has also served as a soccer coach for the Grain Valley High School team.
