One of the Grain Valley defendants in the case of a child who lost seven fingers in a pet ferret attack failed to show up for a court hearing on Thursday.
Carrie Waldo, charged with first-degree child endangerment of their 4-month-old son, did not appear before Circuit Court Judge Michael Manners on Thursday morning.
The court rescheduled her pretrial hearing to Nov. 8, but with the understanding that if she fails to show up again a warrant will be issued for her arrest, according to court staff.
Both Carrie and her husband, Ryan, pleaded not guilty in June 2011 to the charge, and all four children, including the victim, have been living with a relative in Indiana.
The attack occurred on Jan. 10, 2011. Police discovered the boy with only two thumbs and part of a pinkie finger remaining.
The Waldos told detectives they were at home asleep in separate rooms that morning, and were awakened by the child’s screams.
But an investigation into the incident revealed that the parents were not at home when the attack occurred, police said. Police said they subpoenaed cell phone records to determine their location during the incident.
Meanwhile, Ryan Waldo has been granted visitation privileges with the children in Indiana, but only if the family court system there allows it. The visitation will be supervised and he is not permitted to talk about the case with them.
Ryan is scheduled to go to trial on March 11, 2013.
