There are several ways to enjoy the Independence Day holiday in Eastern Jackson County.

Here's a look at today's festivities:

• INDEPENDENCE
Independence will celebrate the holiday as it always does – at the Mormon Visitors Center, 937 W. Walnut St.

Gates open at 8 p.m. At 8:30 p.m. the Spirit of Independence Band will perform followed by the display at 9:30 p.m.

There is limited parking, and people are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs for the lawn viewing area. Food and beverages are welcome, but alcohol, open flames or personal fireworks are prohibited.

In case of rain, a rain date will be announced, but there is no rain in the forecast.

• BLUE SPRINGS
In Blue Springs, the city’s fireworks display will be held at Blue Springs High School’s Peve Stadium, 2000 N.W. Ashton Drive.

Gates open at 7:30 p.m. and live entertainment is from 8-9:30 p.m. Fireworks begin around 9:30 p.m.

Concessions are available for purchase.

• JACKSON COUNTY
Jackson County is holding an Appreciation Celebration today at Longview Lake Beach, 11101 Raytown Road, Kansas City, as a way to thank residents for making it possible for Kauffman Stadium to host the 2012 Major League Baseball All-Star Game.

The event is free and open to the public.

Gates to the Longview Lake beach will open at 6 p.m.

County voters approved renovations to the Truman Sports Complex in April 2006, which helped the Kansas City Metropolitan area land this year’s Mid-Summer Classic.

County officials will also honor local veterans from all branches of the Armed Forces. There will be a skydiving demonstration by the Skydive Kansas City Exhibition Tea; live music by the David Basse Orchestra, as well as food vendors representing restaurants from around the area.

The event will conclude with the largest fireworks finale in Jackson County.

• FORT OSAGE
Fort Osage staff members will re-enact America’s attempts to prepare for war against Great Britain in the year 1812 – with the help of visitors.

The event runs 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Fort Osage Education Center, 107 Osage St., Sibley. The featured program is at 1 p.m. At 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. will be a “call to arms.”

Adult tickets are $7. Ages 5-13 are $4 and 4 and younger are free.

• GRAIN VALLEY
There is no city fireworks display.

• INDEPENDENCE
The 10th Annual “Let Freedom Ring” Parade will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the parking lot of Immanuel Baptist Church at 23rd Street and South Main Street in Independence. Participants will gather at 9:30 a.m.

The parade, mostly of kids on their bikes, scooters and skates, will proceed northward up South Main Street, ending at Historic Independence Square, where participants will have a cold treat provided by Clinton’s ice cream shop.

Independence Mayor Don Reimal will be riding with Ralph Goldsmith and his Pioneer Trails tour wagon.

Veterans are encouraged to participate and will take their place behind the color guard.

• SUGAR CREEK
Sugar Creek will celebrate the Fourth of July beginning with a parade at 11 a.m. in the downtown area, specifically along Sterling Avenue.

A fireworks display will be held at dusk at Kaw Field, located at Elizabeth and Putnam streets, preceded by a community concert outside at the Mike Onka Memorial Building, 11520 Putnam. The Heritage Philharmonic concert starts at 8 p.m. with the mayoral welcome and national anthem at 9:15 p.m. Bring your blankets and/or lawn chairs. Refreshments available.

• MISSOURI TOWN 1855
From  9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., costumed interpreters will share how residents of antebellum Jackson County observed Independence Day in the 1850s.

Children can participate in traditional games and become part of history as they actually sign a copy of the Declaration of Independence. New this year is a presentation of an 1850’s picnic. Visitors look on as Missouri Town residents celebrate with a pot-luck picnic, complete with period-appropriate dishes and food.

Ongoing interpretive demonstrations will highlight the similarities and differences of how we observe the holiday today. The whole family can join the re-enactors and march through town in the annual Fourth of July parade.

Cost is $5 for adults; and $3 for youth ages 5 to 13 and seniors age 62 and older. Children ages 4 and younger are free.

Missouri Town is located at 8010 E. Park Road in Lee’s Summit just southwest of Blue Springs.

• OAK GROVE
Oak Grove will celebrate the holiday beginning at 5 p.m. at Webb Park, 1800 S.E. Oak Ridge Drive.

Several activities will be available, including inflatable activities, food and beverages and the fireworks display, which begins after dark.
