The 2008 W.Z. Hickman Preservation Awards were presented by the Independence Heritage Commission Monday night, with winners in four categories. The winners are:

• Building Preservation, Restoration and Rehabilitation: Terry and David Rausch, homeowners,  9725 East Winner Road.

• Distinguished Service: Michael Calvert, co-writer, Independence Civil War Driving/Walking Tour.

• Distinguished Volunteer: Sandra Dougherty, volunteer, Vaile Mansion.

• Visual Enhancements: Winner Road Neighborhood Association.

The W.Z. Hickman Preservation Awards was established in 2002 in honor of William Zere Hickman (1845-1921), one of the city’s first historic preservationists.
