A 35-year-old Independence man has been charged with assaulting an employee of an Independence auction house.

Independence police arrested Morris E. Grimes in connection with assaulting the man who police reported was on life support as of Tuesday evening.

Charges against Grimes could be upgraded to a more severe felony if the man, who police have not yet identified, dies.

Currently, Jackson County prosecutors have filed second-degree assault charges against Grimes, according to police. He is expected to be arraigned in Jackson County Circuit Court today.

Police were called to the Majestic Auction House at 10112 E. Truman Road at approximately 8:20 a.m. Monday. The man was found unconscious inside the business, according to police.

Grimes pleaded guilty in 2004 on two counts of first-degree domestic assault and is classified as a persistent domestic violence offender. He was placed on supervised probation for five years.

A call to the manager of the auction house was not returned.
