Two Christmas trees in one lighting ceremony?
Yep. That’s because in addition to the city of Independence’s and Jackson County’s tree at the historic Truman Courthouse, the 2012 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree also is expected to arrive at 4 p.m. Saturday. Attendees have the opportunity to view the tree, as well as sign a giant card that will be delivered with the tree to the nation’s capitol.
The traditional Square tree lighting ceremony begins at 5 p.m., with the lighting taking place at 6 p.m.
By the Numbers: U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree Tour
1964: Year the tradition of the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree, also known as “The People’s Tree,” began. Since 1970, the tree has come from one of the country’s national forests.
24: Number of days of the tree’s journey this year, beginning with the harvesting of the tree on Nov. 2 and its arrival in Washington, D.C., on Nov. 26.
73: Number of feet the selected Engelmann Spruce tree stands, selected from the White River National Forest in central Colorado.
3,000: Number of handmade ornaments that will decorate the tree when it is placed on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. Coloradans made the ornaments to depict this year’s theme, “Celebrating the Great Outdoors.”
5,000: Number of miles the tree will travel this year, passing through 30 cities and towns along the way, including Independence.
