Making a Difference: The Examiner's Volunteer of the Week
Name: Sam Schwaller
Age: 15, son of Mary and Bert.
Residence: Independence.
School: Freshman, O’Hara High School.
Other activities: Life Scout in Boy Scout Troop 178 at Nativity of Mary Catholic Church in Independence; plays basketball at O’Hara.
What he did: Several years ago, Sam’s father and others had put up flags for the neighborhood on Main Street south of the Square. Those flags had worn out and needed to be replaced. As his Eagle Scout project, Sam decided to replace the flags.
“I had a bake sale at my parish. ... It raised about $900,” he said.
In November, Sam and his dad hung a dozen new flags.
What did doing an Eagle Scout project teach you? “I learned how you really have to push yourself.”
What do the neighbors say? “They love them. They say, ‘great job.’”
Isn’t it rewarding to have done something like this? “I feel really cool just driving down the street, saying ‘I did this.’”
