Cassie Melville is a Hillaryite.
Just ask her.
“Hillary Clinton is a great, gutsy woman who makes me feel proud to be an American,” said Melville, of Des Moines, Iowa. This morning Melville stood amid a sea of blue shirts exclaiming “Barack Obama ’08” outside the Truman Memorial Building in Independence. Several hours later, the presumptive Democrat presidential nominee was scheduled to speak there.
“I still don’t know if I’m going to vote for him,” Melville said. “There’s still some things I’d like to hear. For one, is he going to pick Hillary as his running mate? He better.”
Not far from Melville were Kim Barnett and Johnny Davidson, both of whom just graduated from North Kansas City High School. Barnett said she has liked Obama since his speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention.
“The man can move me with words unlike anyone has,” Barnett said.
Davidson, on the other hand, is more of a McCain man at the moment. But that may be due in part to his family; his dad, uncle and cousin are all ex-military.
“We’re still trying to sway (Davidson’s) vote,” Barnett said. “I’m hoping Barack can win him over today.”
Davidson said he’s skeptical of Obama.
“He’s gifted in the way he gives his speeches,” Davidson said. “I just wonder if there’s any real substance there; he seems to be all on the surface to me.”
