The Blue Springs Police Department and the city of Blue Springs did its part over the weekend to help children in need.
Thirty Blue Springs police officers volunteered their time Saturday to go shopping with 30 Blue Springs students who are in need this holiday season. The shopping trip was part of the "Shop with a Blue Springs Cop" program, which has been offered for the last three years.
"This is the third year that we have been able to do this event, and we are amazed by the community support for the program here in Blue Springs," said Officer David Brotherton of the Blue Springs Police Department. "It's an honor and a privilege to be able to help make sure these children and their families have a great Christmas this year."
The officers helped the children shop and purchase $125 worth of holiday gifts for their families at the Target in Blue Springs. Following the shopping trip, the children joined the police officers at the Adams Pointe Conference Center for a gift wrapping session and lunch.
In addition to giving the children and their families and happy holiday, Brotherton said the program also gives the children an opportunity to socialize with the officers in a "positive atmosphere." He said it reinforces the fact that police officers are friends in the community.
