The ninth annual Hillcrest Gala and Auction has officially surpassed fundraising goals.

More than $92,000 was donated at the auction, which was Oct. 24 at the Hilton Garden Inn. The annual fundraiser included both a silent and live auction as well as testimony by one of the first graduates of the new Hillcrest Transitional Housing location in Lee’s Summit.

All of the funds raised will be used in the organization’s continuing efforts. Hillcrest Transitional Housing offers families that are displaced an educational program in a Christian environment. The focus is to move families from homelessness to self-sufficiency within 90 days.

Residents are required to work full time, obey program guidelines and attend classes on life skills, employment, community living and budgeting taught by volunteers.

The apartments that Hillcrest residents live in are sponsored by area churches that completely furnish the one-bedroom apartment with everything needed from bedding to groceries. There are three Hillcrest facilities in Eastern Jackson County – Independence, Sugar Creek and the newest in Lee’s Summit.
