Top 10 things to do by the end of summer

While the heat wave may send many inside for refuge, those looking to embrace the warmth have no shortage of things to do.
No matter what the size of your pocketbook, the area offers a variety of summer activities, including a number of free events put on by city parks and recreation departments, as well as Broadway shows for just $10, sporting events and even a little ice skating. Here’s a top ten list of things to do in before summer expires.

10  Boating at Lake Jacomo (in Blue  Springs).
Spend a day at the lake. Boat rental is cheaper during the week with pedal boats coming in at $11 an hour, or $30 for all day usage. Canoes are $10 an hour or $25 for all day usage.  Some of the other boats available include 24-Foot Pontoon Buggies, 16-Foot Fishing Boats, and 16-Foot Bass Boats. 9Royals v. New York Yankees Game on Aug. 13.
See your Royals favorites as well as some of New York’s All Stars like Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter. If you can brave the heat, you’ll be rewarded with fireworks at the end of the night. August 13 is also a 50/50 raffle night where, if you win, you will win half the money from raffle ticket sales and the other half will go to the charity Big Brothers and Sisters. Game tickets prices vary with $9,  $13, and $26 seats being the cheapest, but keep your ears open for bargains around the area. For more information about tickets call 816-921-8000.

8 Car Cruise Night in Blue Springs on Aug. 7.
The first Saturday of the month Blue Springs hosts a car show of sorts. The cars are typically owned by people in the community and the event has hosted more than 200 cars in one night in the past. The event takes place along West Main Street, between 10th and 12th streets from 5 p.m. until dark. Concessions are available. For more information, call Blue Springs Parks and Recreation at 816-228-0137.

7 Monthly Dances at the Truman Memorial Building on Aug. 14.
Every second Saturday of the month, Independence can offer you an introduction to ballroom dancing from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Not much of a dancer? For an extra $2 you can come an hour early for lessons from these private instructors. Sessions cost $8 a person or $15 a couple. For more information you can call the Truman Memorial Building at 816-325-7843.

6Explorer’s Tennis Match v. Philadelphia Freedoms on July 22.
Experience live tennis from Barney Allis Plaza. This is the final home match of the season for the Explorer’s. Matches are high-energy events with music between points. Worried about the heat? This match begins at 7:35 p.m. so you can escape that hottest part of the day. Tickets are $25 for the grandstand and $50 for box seats. After the match you can stick around to meet the players and get autographs. For more information call 816-513-5630.

5 Free Concerts at Rotary Park.
Until Sept. 6, every Sunday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Blue Springs offers music in the park. Bring blankets, chairs and maybe even your pet while enjoying a variety of musical talents, including blues bands, country bands, rock bands, and more – all in a family setting surrounding Railroad Lake. 4 Discount Tuesdays at the Kansas City Zoo.
With the new polar bear passage set to open later this summer, including a 140,000 gallon viewing pool where you can watch the bears swim from above or below, the zoo promises a good time for all. By visiting on a Tuesday, adult and senior tickets are $2.50 off while children tickets are $1.50 off. For more information call 816-513-5800.

3 Party in the Park on July 24.
In honor of National Parks and Recreation month, Swope Park offers a number of cheap or  free activities to the public. Things begin with Blues & Breakfast at Starlight Theatre at 9 a.m. and continue to include free 15-minute golf mini-lessons by PGA Professionals, Zoo Tales at the zoo and a number of other activities. 2 Ice Skating at Centerpoint Community Ice.
The Independence Events Center offers the community a way to beat the heat with afternoon free skating on weekdays from 1 to 3 p.m. In honor of the sticky weather, the Center lets you take whatever the temperature is outside away from your admission (for example, if it’s 94 degrees outside you can take 94 cents off your total). 1 “Dream Girls” at Starlight Theatre July 20-25.
The award winning musical visits Kansas City. The outdoor theatre provides a fresh atmosphere for the performance. The musical starts at 8 p.m. each night and wraps up around 11 p.m. Tickets can be purchased for as low as $10 and max out at $85.
