An end to the cold war and an era of peace in the world was foreseen by former President Harry S. Truman at the rededication ceremony held for the Liberty Bell replica on the Truman Library grounds. “I hope we have the opportunity to ring that bell once again when the end of the Cold War comes,” Mr. Truman said. “It can’t help but come. Then we will have as big a celebration as our forefathers did in Philadelphia.”
The corporation formerly known as Associated Theaters has been incorporated under a new name, Associated Enterprises. They operate the Granada Theatre and the Maywood Bowl. The old Associated Theaters corporation once operated five theaters here. The Englewood Theatre was recently released to the Dickinson chain and two years ago Maywood was converted into a bowling alley. The Plaza and Electric were discontinued several years ago.
The city of Blue Springs now has an assessed valuation in real and personal property of $2 million, it was announced at the meeting of the City Council. This is a gain of $400,000 over last year. At the same session, the Council set the tax levy for the new fiscal year at $1.25 on the $100 assessed valuation.
The State Division of Health reported that five deaths from polio have occurred in Missouri this year. The latest victim was Darryl McKinney, 6, Kansas City, who died July 7. The State Division of Health urged immediate immunization, especially among children under 5 years of age. Polio vaccine shots are being given at the rate of 150 per day at the Jackson County Health Department, since the alarming rise in polio cases in the Kansas City area.
