Drop-off still open for storm debris
Independence’s drop-off depot for brush and debris, 875 Vista Drive, will be open again this week to allow residents to dispose of storm-related brush free of charge.
The depot will accept storm-related brush from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily through Saturday. Saturday will be the final day that the depot will be open for a free drop off. Residents will need to make other disposal arrangements after this week.
Residents will need proof of residency, such as a driver’s license or utility bill, to leave brush and other items at the depot.
Residents who need assistance or would like to volunteer to help with debris cleanup should call 211, which is the United Way regional information line.
More than 400 vehicles took storm-related debris to the depot last week.
Volunteers to help with storm cleanup
Independence’s Citizen Corp Volunteer organizations will sponsor a second cleanup to help elderly and disabled residents of the community who are unable to remove storm-related brush left after the severe weather earlier this month.
The cleanup will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
Emergency Preparedness Manager Mark Widner said the follow-up storm debris removal was set after finding that the groups could not help all those in need with a single cleanup day. The same groups will work again to help with removing brush debris for those unable to do it themselves.
Residents who are in need of assistance or would like to volunteer to help should call 211.
Groups assisting in the project will be the Citizen Emergency Response Team, Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services, Volunteers in Police Service.
