Mrs. Pat Teeters demonstrated various types of Christmas ornaments made from articles found in the home to about 30 persons at a Welcome Wagon Club luncheon. The hostesses were Mrs. Lawrence McHoney and Mrs. Joe Cuzick. New residents to Independence are Mrs. Clifford Nations, Mrs. Maynard Streitler, Mrs. Richard Kent, Mrs. Ralph McBride, Mrs. John Thompson, Mrs. Thomas Hubbard and Mrs. David Hampton.

Mr. and Mrs. Dan Hertzog, dairy farmers near Lee’s Summit, received a plaque commending them for the “70 years of leadership and membership in the 4-H program,” which their six children represent. The presentation was made by G.W. Ballew, 4-H club leader, at the annual 4-H Achievement Banquet at the RLDS Auditorium.

Artist Thomas Hart Benton reported for work at the Truman Library, armed with pencil sketches of the first section of the mural he will paint in the foyer and a color sketch of the entire mural, which will be in polymer tempra. The mural subject, “Independence and the Opening of the West,” was chosen by former President Harry S. Truman and will depict the three decades when Independence was the starting point of the great western migration – between 1817 and 1847.
