Isaiah Jay Smith is number one.

Try this one on: Isaiah was born at 11:11 a.m. on 1/1/11.

Pretty cool, huh?

His mother, Carissa Smith, 21, and his father, Jason Cassara, think it is.

“We’ve been lucky so far,” she said Friday from her bed at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Blue Springs.

Carissa and her baby – her first, of course – have remained at the hospital during the week for tests. During labor, Carissa’s uterus suffered a slight tear, and her and Isaiah’s blood mixed.

“I’m O-negative, and he’s O-positive, so he’s had to take some antibiotics,” she said. “I hope we can leave soon.”

Carissa was taking it easy Friday, relaxing by herself in her room. All she can think about is her baby, brought into the world by cesarean section on the exact day her physician said he would. She began experiencing labor pains the night before.

She says his name aloud with a certain tenderness.

“He weighed 7 pounds and 14 ounces, and he measured 21 inches, but he’s grown so much already,” she said. “I think he’s already gained one pound.”

And already things have been lucky for the family.

A random drawing for a 42-inch television yielded a surprising result: The family won it.

“We’ve never won anything like that before,” she said.

Isaiah wasn’t the first baby born in Eastern Jackson County on New Year’s Day. That honor goes to Collins Isabelle Dougherty, a baby girl born at Centerpoint Medical Center at 11:01 a.m. Jan. 1 – a mere 10 minutes before Isaiah.

Collins was born to Stevy and Jeff Dougherty of Lee’s Summit. She weighed 7 lbs., 4 ounces. and was 20 inches long. She is the Doughertys’ first child.
