Blue Springs will host its annual household hazardous waste collection on Saturday.

The popular event will be from 8 a.m. to noon at Pink Hill Park, 2715 NW Park Road, just west of James Lewis Elementary School off of Missouri 7.

Jim Holley, assistant director of Community Development, said the event remains routine for this year, except that those in attendance can take advantage of a new feature: gas cap check.

“It’s my understanding that caps will be checked for leaks,” Holley said. “It’s a new thing we’re offering this year, and it only takes a few moments to do it.”

Beyond that, the typical items that will be accepted free of charge include automotive fluids, batteries, CFL (compact fluorescent lamp) light bulbs, household cleaners, hazardous liquids and solvents, lawn and garden products, pesticides, pool chemicals, paints and related products.

Explosives, tires, asbestos and yard, medical and commercial waste will not be accepted.

Some cities and areas, including Sugar Creek and Cass County, are not part of the Mid-America Regional Council Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program. Should residents from those areas come to the event, they are required to pay $75.

Holley said the event remains one of the city’s most popular.

“It gets a lot of attention,” he said, adding that people who wish to use the recycling center Saturday morning should reconsider until later in the afternoon or on Sunday.

“There are many cars and entrance into the park is slow,” he said.

Those attending the event are asked to access Pink Hill Park using Park Road, located on the south side of the park.

For those unable to attend this event, permanent drop-off facilities for these materials are available to Blue Springs residents year-round at the Kansas City Recycling Facility, at 4707 Deramus, in the east river bottoms, 513-8400; or the Lee’s Summit Resource Recovery Park, 2101 S.E. Hamblin Road, 969-7516.
Contact these facilities directly for directions and hours of operation. Appointments are required at drop-off facilities.

For more information on this program or for other participating community’s event locations and times, contact Nadja Karpilow at the Mid-America Regional Council at 701-8226, visit the city’s website at www.bluespringsgov.com/hhwaste or call the recycling hotline at 228-0228.

Holley is also asking that anyone wishing to volunteer for the event to call Blue Springs Community Development at 228-0124.
