A new shooting range in eastern Independence is coming soon.
Jackson County legislators on Monday inched closer to ending the county’s 30-year-old lease with the Missouri Department of Conservation for the shooting range on Argo Road in Landahl Park, east of Missouri 7. They assigned the matter to the Legislature’s Land Use Committee and could take final action next week.
A new, $4.7 million Department of Conservation range has been under construction for more than a year at a 60-acre site to the north, off Truman Road, also in Landahl Park. County documents say that range – the Lake City Range and Outdoor Education Center – is scheduled to open in December.
Officials say the new range will be bigger and better, with new ranges for rifles, pistols, shotguns and bow and arrow. It will have a 10-booth, 25-yard pistol range, and room for trap and skeet shooting.
It will have a means of recovering spent ammunition to be recycled and an education center with 75-person classroom for teaching shooting and hunting safety, among other classes.
It will be one of five manned shooting complexes in the state.
The current range will be turned over to the Sheriff’s Department and used by law enforcement.
