While significant discussion surrounding the new regional animal shelter is likely for the next two weeks, the first Independence City Council meeting of 2013 was a short one.
In the 30-minute meeting Monday night, council members had the first reading on one ordinance and vote to continue the second reading indefinitely. That ordinance involves the Interstate 70 and Little Blue Parkway tax increment financing area and redevelopment project 1, also known as the Menards home improvement store and a nearby convenience store.
In December, Menards officials at the store’s headquarters in Wisconsin announced that their plans to expand into the Kansas City market were on hold for now because of the economy and choices made by President Barack Obama’s administration. The chain had planned to locate near I-70 and Little Blue Parkway, clearing the Planning Commission in October.
When Menards is ready to locate in Independence, the ordinance will come back for a second reading. According to a city staff report, the ordinance allows the development “to receive the most benefit possible when economic conditions allow.”
