Eastern Jackson County, MO —
The following items were taken from the Jan. 5 through 11, 1913, Examiner.
- The council appointed Councilman Gentry, Rummel and Krahl as special committee to lay out and recommend a benefit district for the opening of a street from Maple Avenue to Lexington Street. George B. Charlton, who lives on North Delaware street, talked in favor of some kind of opening between Maple and Lexington. He said it would be a great convenience to a large number of people who now have to walk around the long block between Pleasant and Union streets.
- The general improvement of the city cemetery has been undertaken by the members of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Women’s Civic Club. It is expected that a Cemetery Improvement Association will be organized and plans made for the general improvement of the city’s burying ground. The old city cemetery is one of the institutions to which our citizens do not “point with pride.” It is nearly 100 years old and one of the oldest and best known burying grounds in all Western Missouri.
- The new officers for the Knights of Pythias Lodge for 2013 are Howard C. Hinde, chancellor commander; Harry G. Chance, vice chancellor; John Waldon, prelate; Dr. E.E. Kerr, master of work; John A. McCoy, keeper of records and seals; Albert M. Ott, master of the exchequer; C.W. Fields, master at arms; Lawrence Hills, inner guard; Martin Casper, outer guard; and W.F. Ramsey, master of finance.
- A change in personnel is taking place in the Martin-Parker Hardware Company on the south side of the public square. George S. Parker, who has been a member of the firm since its organization about two years ago, has sold his interests to Jesse Martin, and has retired. Martin said that the firm had effected a consolidation with the plumbing business of John A. Welch, and the two businesses will be merged.
