Today, The Examiner and KMBC-TV are unveiling a new partnership with Channel 9 chief meteorologist Bryan Busby.
Busby, who has been with Channel 9 since 1985, will provide Examiner readers with his seven-day outlook on the daily weather page on the back of the A section in the print edition.
“I think to get the forecast out to as many different outlets as possible is good,” Busby said. “People are busy and may not catch me at 6 or 10, but they can still get the information every morning.”
Busby said he believes the partnership will be good for Channel 9 viewers as well as Examiner readers.
“We both know our audience,” Busby said. “We have to serve our customers to the best of our ability.”
Channel 9 has been the No. 1-rated news station in the Kansas City area since 1988, said Busby, who has spent his entire career forecasting Missouri weather.
Examiner Executive Editor Dale Brendel said Busby’s forecast will improve the newspaper’s weather package. Beginning today, The Examiner will have Busby’s seven-day forecast, rather than just a five-day outlook.
“Byran Busby has been the premier weather forecaster in Kansas City for more than 2O years,” Brendel said. “And since he is a resident of Eastern Jackson County, he can particularly identify with our readers. We are excited to be partnering with Bryan and Channel 9.”
He has lived just outside of Blue Springs in eastern Independence for 13 years.
“I like the people,” Busby said. “They’re friendly, nice, helpful. It’s a cool vibe.”
Busby grew up in Ohio and first got his interest in weather when he was about 9 years old. He recalls a particular storm when lightning struck a tree on his street.
“I was pretty petrified,” Busby said. “I was scared of thunderstorms.”
At school, Busby’s teacher talked to him about weather and the science behind it, taking him to the library for further research.
And he was hooked.
“From the third grade, I knew I wanted to do this,” Busby said.
He received his degree in meteorology from St. Louis University and started working for a station in St. Louis in 1978, eventually coming to Kansas City in 1985.
Since that time technology has helped Busby make more accurate forecasts. Specifically, the use of satellites, Busby said, has helped improve weather accuracy across the board.
“The ability to take a picture of Earth and look at what’s going on has been great,” Busby said. “And the data we look at is better than what we used to look at.”
Beyond his passion for weather, Busby is also an accomplished musician. He was just named the principal guest conductor for the Heritage Philharmonic Symphony based in Independence.
Busby’s daily forecast can be found each day in The Examiner or each night at 6 and 10 on KMBC Channel 9, Comcast channel 12.
