THURSDAY
- INTERNET SAFETY, 7 p.m., Truman Memorial Building, 416 W. Maple Ave., Independence. Detective John Howe of the Intelligence Unit of the Independence Police Department will speak on Internet safety issues involving child enticement, child exploitation, child pornography, cyber bullying and more. Refreshment and door prizes will also be provided. This meeting is being held in conjunction with the Independence Police Neighborhood Crime Watch Program and the McCoy Neighborhood. - FALL FESTIVAL with quilt show, 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., The Groves Community Room, located in White Oak Living Center, 1515 W. White Oak, Independence. Festivities include corn shucking, apple bobbing, music by Ken Cox, Mike Tistone and John Dye, along with a quilt and craft show. The community is welcome. - POOCHES IN THE POOL, sponsored by Blue Springs Parks and Recreation, noon to 3 p.m., Centennial Pool Plex, Blue Springs. This dog swim is a benefit for the Blue Springs off-leash dog park. All dogs are invited to play and swim freely in the fenced outdoor pool area prior to the draining of the pool for the season. All dogs must have current vaccinations and have a collar on at all times. Maximum capacity: 100 dogs. You may register in advance or register the day of the event. Cost, $5 per dog. - NFL PEPSI PUNT, PASS & KICK competition for ages 8 to 15, 10 a.m. to noon, Heart of America Pop Warner fields, 2801 S. Necessary Road, Independence. This event, sponsored by Independence Parks and Recreation and Heart of America Pop Warner, allows children to showcase their talents in eight age categories for punting, passing and kicking, with scores based on distance and accuracy.
