The Blue Springs Historical Society is celebrating its 35th birthday with dinner and a little bit of talent too.
The fourth annual Blue Springs Has Talent Dinner and fundraiser is scheduled for mid-month. The event is at 6 p.m. Oct. 16 at Blue Springs High School, 2000 N.W. Ashton Drive. Tickets are $18 per person or $35 for a couple. The ticket includes dinner, cooked by members of the Blue Springs Eastern Star, and entertainment.
“It is based on the TV show, ‘America's Got Talent,’” said Ron Potter, member of the Blue Springs Historical Society. “We have different acts who come up on stage and show their talent. There are no prizes, so it’s just for fun, but everyone has a great time.”
The event this year will commemorate the saving and current restoration project of the Blue Springs Chicago and Alton Depot, which was moved from Main Street to Central Park earlier this summer.
The original 1879 depot burned and was destroyed in the 1920s. In 1926, the one-story structure was built. Kansas City Southern had planned to raze the historic structure, but fundraiser efforts proved successful to save the building from demolition.
“All of the proceeds from the event will go toward the historical society,” Potter said “The silent auction we are having will also go to help restore the depot.”
Among the entertainers at the dinner are soloists, a guitarist and pianists. Music will range from gospel to jazz and ragtime. Former Mayor Steve Steiner will perform a short magic show, and rapper Nick Malick will be back once again this year.
“The most fun thing is always seeing the different talent. It is interesting every year,” Potter said. “Of course there is (former) Mayor Steiner who does magic tricks and sometimes we get Mayor Carson Ross to come and sing. All the (Blue Springs) city council members put on a little skit and there are so many other acts. It is fun every year.”
Tickets are still available for the Blue Springs Has Talent Dinner. Reservations can be made from 1 to 4 p.m. Sundays at the Dillingham-Lewis Museum, 101 S.W. 15th St.
