Megan Petrie is a senior at Blue Springs High School and is portraying the role of Marysia Pawlina in the fall theater production of “Angel in the Night.” This is her fourth show at Blue Springs High School including roles in “The Music Man” and “Seussical the Musical.”
What is the play, “Angel in the Night” about? It centers around this Jewish family desperately trying to survive during World War II. It also tells the story of Pawlina, who risks her own life and the lives of her family to save them.
What is it like to play a character that existed in real life? It is really humbling. I did a lot of research before we started rehearsing to discover her true story. I wanted to connect with her in order to give justice to what she did in her life.
How does it feel to be a part of a play with such a mature theme? We are known as a school that does comedies, so it was a challenge. But I think it helped us to grow a lot as actors. I for one, was really excited to be in “Angels in the Night.” It was nerve-wracking because it is not what I am used to, but I love dramatic pieces because of the underlying message.
What makes this play different from other dramatic pieces? I love that it is a true story. Pawlina is a real person and to act out what she went through makes it so much more powerful.
What do you hope audience members walk away with after seeing “Angels in the Night?” I hope they realize that every individual is capable of overcoming injustice whether or not that is in a high school hallway or in the middle of the war. We are all the same. Race and religion can’t matter.
