Missouri Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder recently announced 24 winners of the Lieutenant Governor’s Senior Service Award, including Don and Mary Puhr of Sugar Creek and Leo Sebelski of Blue Springs.
Kinder presented the awards at a luncheon for the winners and their guests outside of his office in the Capitol. Connie Halastik, director of the Sugar Creek Parks and Recreation Department, nominated the Puhrs, while state Rep. Sheila Solon of Blue Springs nominated Sebelski.
Don Puhr spent many hours helping to remodel St. Cyril’s Church rectory, where he also helps with funeral lunches. He also volunteers for the Citizens Civic Relief Commission and the local food pantry, as well as making fishing lures for his grandson’s Scout troop auction and helping at the annual Family Fall Fest and Slavic Festival.
Mary Puhr belongs to the St. Cyril’s Altar Society and volunteers on the church finance committee and as a sacristan. She volunteers for the Citizens Civic Relief Commission and makes quilts and baby items for the Quilt Guild of the Truman Medical Center.
For more than a decade, Sebelski has served the Stanley-Pack American Legion Post 499 in Blue Springs as the oldest member of the post’s honor guard. He travels with the honor guard, providing military honors at funerals of American servicemen and women.
The award winners received an official declaration and Senior Service Award lapel pins at a ceremony in the House Lounge of the Capitol.
