The man who played the Man from Independence will be coming to town.

Actor Gary Sinise has been announced as the winner of the 2011 Harry S. Truman Good Neighbor Award. The award will be presented at a luncheon in downtown Kansas City next May, to coincide with Truman’s birthday .

Sinise, 55, won a Golden Globe award and was nominated for an Emmy award for his portrayal of the 33rd president in the HBO movie “Truman” in 1995. He has played a variety of roles through the years. His most memorable is the gruff Lieutenant Dan in “Forrest Gump” in 1994, for which he was nominated for an Oscar. (He also plays bass in Gary Sinise & the Lt. Dan Band.)

Sinise is active in humanitarian efforts, including Operation International Children (formerly Operation Iraqi Children) and support for the USO, for which he was given the Presidential Citizen Medal in 2008. Since playing Lt. Dan, who loses his legs in Vietnam, Sinise has embraced the cause of disabled vets, and he’s become the chief spokesman for building the American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial in the nation’s capital. He was on hand for a groundbreaking ceremony this week. He also uses the Lt. Dan Band in efforts to help those in the Armed Services.

Sinise currently plays the lead role on the CBS show “CSI: New York.” He’s also been in “Apollo 13,” “The Green Mile,” and a television adaptation of “The Grapes of Wrath.” He won an Emmy in 1997 for his portrayal of former Alabama Gov. George Wallace in a TV miniseries. In 1992, he was nominated for a Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival for his portrayal of George in a film adaptation of John Steinbeck’s “Of Mice and Men,” a movie he also directed.

The Good Neighbor Award is presented annually by the Harry S. Truman Good Neighbor Award Foundation, a group started by many of the president’s friends shortly after Truman died in 1972.

The first winner, in 1973, was former U.S. Chief Justice Earl Warren.

Other past winners include former President Gerald Ford, former Vice President Nelson Rockefeller, historian and “Truman” author David McCullough, historian John Hope Franklin, U.S. Sens. Bob Dole and “Kit” Bond, author Tom Clancy, astronaut Buzz Aldrin and journalists Walter Cronkite, Jim Lehrer and Robert MacNeil. The 2010 winner was former U.S. Sen. Jean Carnahan of Missouri.

The annual luncheon is set for May 5, 2011, in the Imperial Ballroom of the Marriott Hotel – Muehlebach Tower in Kansas City. It’s open to the public, though reservations are required. The cost is $60 per person. Call the foundation office, 913-722-1211.
