Rep. Sheila Solon, R-Blue Springs, has filed a bill that would cut costs for cancer patients receiving oral chemotherapy treatments.

HB1158 would require health care providers to establish equal out-of-pocket requirements for oral anti-cancer medications and intravenously-administered chemotherapy treatments.

Oral chemotherapy drugs often cost thousands more, and the new legislation would prohibit insurance providers from charging a higher co-payment, deductible or coinsurance amount. The bill would also bar insurance providers from upping the cost of intravenous medicine.

“Having cancer is devastating enough, but spending hours receiving chemo intravenously when you can receive it orally – just because of the cost – is unacceptable,” Solon said in a release. “This legislation would ensure that patients receive the best chemotherapy option for them.”

The bill has not yet been assigned to committee.
