While Eastern Jackson County has been blessed with a relatively mild winter this year, Friday’s rainy weather may leave some residents dreaming of vacationing during spring break and the summer months.

But the idea of a vacation is often tied to the notion of saving up and then being prepared to spend hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars for what’s supposed to be a relaxing experience.

Not necessarily, says Grain Valley resident Chrissy Pate, the co-founder of BeCentsAble and its money-saving tips blog, www.becentsable.net. Fresh off a nine-day trip to Disney World with two adults and two young children, all of which cost less than $1,500, Pate shares her Top 5 tips for taking a vacation on a budget.

1 Research, research, research before booking a trip.

If you’re vacationing with children, Pate suggests reading travel forums or websites made for parents, including those focused on the city you’ll visit.

Brainstorm ideas for what you’ll do – and how to save money on those activities – once you reach your destination.

“We always get travel books and do tons of research on the Internet to find out all about our vacation destination,” Pate writes on her website. “You will have to spend a little money and time but will save a ton by just doing your research.”

2 Travel during the off season.

In your research, find out when the high and low seasons are for your desired destination, Pate said. Her four-member family recently went to Disney and spent $100 per plane ticket (round-trip, direct flight “and no crazy hours,” Pate said) and found a hotel, just two miles from the theme park, for $27 a night with free breakfast, a pool and Internet access.

“It was easy to find deals since it was the low season,” she said.

3 Cut out the middle man and book a vacation home.

In 2009, Pate’s family stayed in a million-dollar condominium that they could ski right up to. This was possible, she said, because they saved 50 percent by booking directly – and early – from the owner. She also suggested renting a timeshare property directly from the owner.

4 Get coupon-crazy, even while vacationing.

Using coupons is trendy again in the United States, but don’t forget about them just because you’re on rest-and-relaxation time. Do an Internet search for coupons in your destination city, Pate said, and check out daily deal sites, as well as the local tourism department’s website.

“After you book, make sure to check back to see if there isn’t a better deal,” Pate said. “Some places will change your reservation and give you the savings.”

5 Avoid the money traps.

The little extra expenses – snacks, strollers, cameras, sunscreen – can add up fast. Make a list of what you think you’ll need and stock up before heading out of town.

“Plan well so you make sure you are not buying $15 sunscreen on vacation,” Pate said. “Don’t forget about those pricey souvenirs. I bought some Disney PJs on sale for only $5 before we left and packed them to give to the kids on our trip.”
