Students at Lee’s Summit North High School have spent the last several weeks participating in community service projects.
The idea, according the Leslie Bross, a Lee’s Summit North teacher, was to help teach the students about giving to others who are less fortunate, while also getting their fellow classmates involved.
1. What community service projects did the Lee’s Summit North National Honor Society organize this fall?
The National Honor Society conducted a coat drive, collecting approximately 500 gently used coats and blankets. They then delivered the coats to St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store in Kansas City. In addition, students prepared and served dinner to residents of a family shelter in Kansas City, provided child care for the children of Polytainers employees, decorated to Hope House facilities for Christmas and visited Hope House right before Christmas to watch a movie and have snacks with the children staying at the shelter.
2. Why is it important to give back to the community in this way?
“It was an excellent lesson in giving back to others in the community,” Bross said.
3. What did the students do to get the entire Lee’s Summit North community involved?
“In addition to collecting and delivering the coats, students made posters and announcements all around school to promote the drive. They also spent time organizing all the coats into various categories (before donating them to the thrift store).”
