One Blue Springs man may face federal charges and four others may face state charges after police discovered firearms, narcotics, ammunition and a small explosive device Friday morning in a Blue Springs home.
Michael Hand, spokesperson for the Jackson County Drug Task Force, said police served a search warrant at 4917 N.W. Pennington Lane at about 6 a.m. Friday morning in Blue Springs.
Accompanied by the Blue Springs Special Tactical Assistance Team, the task force discovered a small amount of narcotics, one sawed off shotgun with the serial number filed off, one sawed off rifle with the serial number filed off, one reported stolen handgun, miscellaneous ammunition and a small explosive device.
Police also discovered five adults in the home, as well as three small children, who were later placed in the care of an immediate relative.
“We were actually expecting only two adults,” Hand said. “We don’t know where the other three came from.”
Hand said he believed all the adults were Blue Springs residents, one of whom may be a convicted felon and prohibited from possessing any kind of firearm.
“That would make it a federal offense,” Hand said.
Hand said the explosive was a CO2 container full of what appeared to be black powder.
“It’s obviously a dangerous device, especially if it were to be rattled around or experience friction of some kind,” he said.
Once the device was discovered, the residence was evacuated and the Independence Police Department’s Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team was notified, responding and removing the device from the house. The device was taken from the scene for destruction.
The adults, who were not yet identified by police, were transported to the Independence Police Department’s Detention Unit where they will be questioned by task force detectives.
