An Independence man was killed early Monday after police said the driver of a vehicle he was in drove off the road and struck a tree.

Reports show that Jonathan D. Dabney, 25, of Independence, was a passenger in a 2001 Pontiac when the driver, Bridgette Hood, 20, of Oak Grove, ran off the right side of Missouri Route F, a few miles north of Cline Road south of Oak Grove in unincorporated Jackson County, at about 3 a.m. Monday.

The vehicle struck several small trees, continued north in the ditch, vaulted from a gravel driveway and struck another tree. Dabney died at the scene and Hood is listed in serious condition, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
