An unidentified man is under arrest today after an attempted robbery of the Bank of America at 18820 East U.S. 40 near Missouri 291.

According to Independence police officials at 9:47 a.m. the 50-year-old man walked into the bank carrying a brief case, announced he had a bomb and  demanded money. After employees of the bank were able to trigger an alarm, police responded and successfully evacuated the building before the suspect surrendered without incident.

Independence's Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was able to determine with the aid of federal authorities that the briefcase did not contain a bomb.

Authorities said the man is being evaluated for mental health problems, and federal charges are pending.

The suspect is expected to be charged Monday.
