The award is noncompetitive, so those that meet the criteria are honored. The EDC says the awards since 2007 represent more than 2,000 added jobs.
-- Manufacturer of the year.
-- Small business of the year. Two awards are given, one for companies with one to 10 employees and one for those with 11 to 50 employees. The awards are based on general business practives, community involvement and leadership in the business community.
-- Entrepreneur of the year. This has to be a company in Independence, it has to be no more than three years old, and the principal founder still have to be involved in the day-to-day operations.
Companies may nominate themselves or be nominated by others.
The luncheon speaker is Rick Smyre, founder of Communities of the Future, which the EDC describes as a network of people and organizations developing new concepts of governance, economic development, leadership and education as the world becomes more complex and interconnected. Smyre is to speak on transformative economic development and preparing for an unpredictable future.
