An Independence man has been charged with the shooting death of his girlfriend on Saturday.
Sean W. Ray, 41, faces a charge of first-degree involuntary manslaughter and a charge of armed criminal action in Kari Jean Tabor's death.
According to court documents, a 911 call came to Independence police at 12:09 p.m. Saturday and the caller identified himself as Ray. He said he had accidentally shot Tabor in the stomach at his house at 1917 S. Norton Ave.
Officers arrived, took Ray into custody and performed emergency first aid on Tabor, 46. She was taken to Centerpoint Medical Center, where she died of the gunshot wound.
Ray's blood alcohol level tested at .222 at 2:08 p.m. Saturday
Ray told police he had just finished cleaning his German-made .22 rifle. He said then he took the gun and the cleaning oil downstairs to the kitchen and argued with Tabor about money spent to buy dog food and cat litter.
He pointed the gun at her and she asked him to stop. He said the gun accidentally went off about the same time she grabbed the barrel and moved it away from her.
She said she showed him she had been shot and he put the gun on a ledge and began assisting her and called 911.
