A Blue Springs man survived a two-story fall from an escalator at the Independence Center on Saturday night.

Colby M. Wochner, 26, of Blue Springs, was on the top floor and fell into the food court area of the shopping mall.

Wochner, who was reported to have died from the fall by several media outlets including The Examiner, survived, though his condition was unknown Monday afternoon.

“We’re believing it was alcohol related,” said Tom Gentry, police spokesperson.

Danielle Flood, who was with her husband at the center, told The Examiner that Wochner was trying to ride down the railing of the escalator.

“I was sitting right in front of the information center and heard a lady yell, No! and I looked over and saw two ladies, one with a little baby,” Flood said in an email. “(They said) he hopped on the hand rail and was going to ride down that way, and as soon as he lost his balance he tried to hold on but couldn’t.”

Flood said the man first hit a table and several people thought a gunshot had been fired.

Police said charges are unlikely.

No one else was injured.
