Jackson County is planning a Fourth of July event as a thank-you to voters who approved upgrades to Kauffman Stadium that made next month’s Major League Baseball All-Star Game in Kansas City possible.

The gates will open at 6 p.m. at Longview Lake beach in Lee’s Summit. The free event will include a salute to veterans and what officials call “the biggest fireworks display ever in Jackson County.” Vendors will sell food. No grills and no pets allowed, officials say.

Voters in 2006 approved a countywide sales tax of three-eighths of a cent to pay for renovation to Arrowhead and Kauffman Stadiums, which are owned by the county. In return, the Chiefs and Royals signed long-term leases to stay in Kansas City. In addition, Major League Baseball typically awards its All-Star Game to a team that has significantly upgraded its stadium or built a new one, and MLB made that promise to Kansas City before the 2006 vote. The new Kauffman was unveiled in 2010. The game is July 10 at Kauffman, just the third time Kansas City has ever hosted an All-Star Game.

The voter appreciation event this year will take the place of Lakefest, a popular summer event traditionally held at Lake Jacomo.
